I AM SO UNCOMFORTABLE ON THIS TEAM…
Due to some operational inefficiencies on a multi-vendor project, the team reshuffled roles and I moved from a key support position to being one of the key project managers. Now I’m in day-long meetings with people I barely interacted with a month ago. This is a long project with rapidly escalating costs and schedule slip. I’m suddenly in a new role with existing players, existing problems, and existing leadership. How do I get comfortable as the new person (when I’m not new)?
I’m quick to jump in and it takes several weeks to observe and understand the dynamics of the management team. It takes even more time to pinpoint the actual issues and get them documented and escalated. Schedules continue to slip, costs continue to escalate until I can drive resolution to the issues. Could I have evaluated this any faster and not burned up so much time?
Had the team gone through a basic communications assessment and measurement at the beginning of the project, I could have quickly reviewed how people communicate and what they expect of others in their communication. This would have reduced the amount of my consultant time in meetings where we are discussing but not delivering.
